Being my first purchase and thus endeavour into the world of premium hair styling products, my review will be limited by the fact. However, I do consider this to be a great everyday styling clay with some great ingredients, including mango butter, a handful of healthy oils including jojoba oil (cue pink panther), as well as a well-known antioxidant, vitamin E.
Application/breakdown: I recommend going in with one finger scoop at a time, due to its thickness it will encourage users to aggressively/accidentally scoop out more than required. Heavy scoops will only result in faster hardening of the product in your hair (from my experience) due to the unwanted build-up. Scoops out really thick.
Finish: It will feel dry in your hair due to the high clay content but also makes my straight thin hair feel really soft.
Hold: I would classify this as a firm/heavy, the hold is firm but the product tends to weigh down my fine hair, making it look flat at the end of the day.
Scent: The official scent is redwood and it is so addictive to me. There could be better scents out there but I am 100% satisfied with this one. It is not a striking scent, its very subtle and difficult to describe, it reminds me of warmer woody scents suitable for colder weathers.
Washability: Rinses out with shampoo, with water alone the build-up will be present but clean, not oily, more tacky and rubbery.
Ingredients: Distilled Water, White Kaolin Clay, Beeswax, Emulsifying Wax (Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20), Candelilla Wax, Mango Seed Butter, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Microcrystalline Wax, Apricot Kernel Oil, Jojoba Oil, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sea Clay, Fragrance, Vitamin E, Optiphen Plus (Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid).
Overall: For me, the clay and mango butter in this product balances impressively between being dry yet soft which also turns out be be a major downside. Contact with humidity and my hair will begin to push against itself and jump out from my slickback into what resembles a makeshift umbrella, not so sexy, and not to mention even with the use of hairspray. All in all, I would continue using this product because of its nourishing properties, but mostly likely will not repurchase, instead I’ll look into other offerings from Nostalgic Grooming, and although their clay is not suited for my hair, I appreciate the effort they put into making products like this.
